Water moves through sand quickly and carries nutrients with it, so the root zone empties faster than the palm can draw from it.

Organic matter slows that loss. Soil carrying carbon and active biology helps hold nutrients in place and releases them as roots need them, which is why proper fertilization of a palm tree starts below the surface rather than at the leaves.

Why Lawn Fertilizer Makes Palms Worse

What matters on a palm is the ratio between nutrients rather than the total amount applied. Clemson Extension states that palms need formulations with potassium levels equal to or greater than nitrogen. Turf products are built the opposite way, carrying heavy nitrogen and light potassium because grass blades respond to nitrogen.

Put that on a palm and the nitrogen drives growth the potassium cannot support. The palm pulls potassium out of its older leaves to feed the new ones, and the yellowing spreads. Conventional advice sends people toward a granular fertilizer with slow release coatings, plus separate corrections like magnesium sulphate for magnesium or bone meal for phosphorus.
