What Makes Us Different?

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Dr. JimZ Bokashi® different from other bokashi bran?

Most bokashi bran on the market is a single-fermented wheat bran with a basic microbial blend. Dr. JimZ Bokashi® is double fermented using both wheat bran and rice bran, and it includes over 65 trace minerals along with a specially formulated ratio of effective microorganisms. The result is a more active, nutrient-rich bokashi mix that breaks down waste faster and produces a richer end product for your soil.

How does bokashi composting work?

Bokashi composting uses an anaerobic fermentation process to break down food waste. Add your kitchen scraps to a bokashi bin or bucket, layer with a half cup of Dr. JimZ Bokashi®, and seal the lid. Beneficial microbes in the bran ferment organic material without oxygen, unlike traditional composting, which relies on an aerobic process. After a few weeks, the fermented waste can be buried in garden soil or added to a compost pile where it breaks down rapidly.

What can I put in a bokashi bin?

One of the biggest advantages of the bokashi method over traditional composting is that it handles almost all food scraps. Meat, dairy, cooked food, fruit, vegetables, coffee grounds, and bread can all go in. Most traditional composting systems can't handle meat or dairy without attracting pests, but the sealed anaerobic environment of a bokashi system eliminates that problem. Just layer your kitchen waste with bokashi bran, press it down to remove air, and keep the lid sealed.

Can I use Dr. JimZ Bokashi® directly in my garden soil?

Yes. Beyond bokashi composting, you can sprinkle the bran directly over your garden soil and water it in. The beneficial microbes go to work improving the soil biology right away. For even better results, water it in with Chicken Soup For The Soil®, since the microbes respond well to the carbon-based nutrition. This approach works great for houseplant soil, raised beds, and any garden area where you want to boost microbial activity and build healthy soil.

What is bokashi tea, and how do I use it?

During the bokashi fermentation process, liquid collects at the bottom of your bokashi bucket. This is bokashi tea, a nutrient-rich liquid that works as a soil amendment for your plants. Drain it every few days, dilute it, and apply it to plant roots or garden soil. You can also pour undiluted bokashi tea down drains to help break down buildup.

Does Dr. JimZ Bokashi® work in compost piles, or only in sealed bins?

Both. In a sealed bokashi composter or gallon bucket, the product drives anaerobic fermentation that breaks down food waste. In an open compost pile, scatter a few handfuls into the center to encourage microbial activity and speed up decomposition. It also works in a worm bin or farm, giving worms a boost of beneficial microbes and speeding up breakdown in any system.

How should I store Dr. JimZ Bokashi®, and how long does it last?

Store it in a sealed bag away from direct sunlight and moisture. The product is dry-packed for easy shipping and storage. As long as it stays sealed and dry, the microbial blend remains active for an extended period. Once opened, keep the bag tightly closed between uses. Each bag treats multiple rounds of bokashi composting, so a single purchase goes a long way.
