Mycorrhizae is Greek for fungus root. Underground, a fungus attaches to the plant and the two work as one system. Oklahoma State University Extension defines mycorrhiza as a symbiotic relationship between the fungus and its host plant, one that dates back 400 to 500 million years to the first vegetation on land.

A Trade Between Fungus and Root

Mycorrhizal symbiosis works as an exchange. The plant sends sugars and carbon down to the fungus, and the fungus delivers water and mineral nutrients back up. Botanists call it a mutualistic relationship because both organisms gain something they cannot make themselves. A fungus living on roots may sound like a disease, but this mutually beneficial relationship never harms the plant. The fungus cannot produce sugars and depends on a host plant for carbon, while the plant gains a root network far larger than the one it grew. How Far the Hyphae Reach

The part of the fungus that does the collecting is a network of fungal hyphae. These are threads far finer than a human hair, growing out from the plant root into the surrounding soil. They slip into pores too small for roots to enter, which is why the fungus reaches nutrients the plant cannot. Piedmont Master Gardeners estimates that roughly 90 percent of vascular plants form a mycorrhizal relationship, so it is the norm rather than the exception.

Endo and Ecto

Mycorrhizae fall into two main types, and the difference is where the fungus goes on the root.

  • Endomycorrhizae, also called vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae, penetrate the root cells directly. This group serves most vegetables, flowers, herbaceous plants, grasses, and fruit trees such as apple, peach, and citrus.

  • Ectomycorrhizal fungi form a sheath around the outside of the root instead. They partner mainly with woody plants, including pine, oak, birch, and nut trees such as pecan.

The most obvious benefit is reach. A colonized root system explores a far larger volume of soil, which improves nutrient absorption and uptake without adding a thing to the ground. Phosphorus matters most here, since it barely moves through soil and roots have to go find it.

Water works the same way. Hyphae draw moisture from pores and depths roots cannot reach, so colonized plants hold up better under drought stress and recover faster from transplant shock. The fungi also produce a sticky protein that binds soil particles together, improving soil structure and building long-term soil health rather than just feeding one season of plant growth.

Why Your Soil May Be Short on Them

Beneficial fungi are native to most ground that grows plants, and mycorrhizal symbiosis forms there on its own. Populations thin out under four common conditions.

  • Tilling shreds the hyphal network, which is physically fragile and takes months to rebuild.

  • Fungicides do not distinguish between pathogens and mycorrhizal fungi.

When and How to Add Mycorrhizae

Apply at Planting

A mycorrhizal inoculant only works where fungal spores touch a root, which is why placement matters more than quantity. Planting is the only point when the whole root ball is exposed and easy to reach, and Illinois Extension lists mixing mycorrhizal products into the backfill as a standard way to reestablish lost populations. Apply the same product to established ground and the spores have to migrate down to the root zone on their own.

Rates depend on what is going in the ground:

  • Annuals and vegetables take 1 to 2 tablets.

  • Larger perennials, roses, shrubs, and one-gallon pots take 5 to 7 tablets.

  • One-inch caliper trees, bare root trees, and larger shrubs take one pouch.

What Works Against It
