Leaves roll for a simple reason: the plant is losing water faster than the root system can replace it. Heat, drought, heavy pruning, and fast top growth all create that gap, and knowing which one is at work tells you whether the plant needs help or just time.
The most common form of tomato leaf curl is a physiological response, not a disease. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes it as an upward cupping of the leaflets followed by an inward roll toward the midvein, starting on the lower leaves and moving up. An affected curled leaf thickens and feels leathery, but holds a normal green color.
